Because <em>that\u2019s<\/em> where the power lies. By coaching while laughing at my own blunders, clumsy metaphors, and wildly inappropriate jokes about personalities and behaviors, space opens up.\u00a0Space to take yourself a little less seriously \u2014 which helps you find your own solutions, or even accept that self-declared \u2018problem\u2019 of yours.\u00a0One time, I \u2018accidentally\u2019 congratulated a client on her burnout: \u201cWow, impressive! You\u2019ve worked yourself into the ground \u2014 respect!\u201d. I saw the shock on her face. I grinned and said: \u201cMaybe not the best opening line?\u201d. She burst out laughing \u2014 and <em>that\u2019s<\/em> when the real conversation began.<\/p>\n<p>Provocative coaching is so effective because humor disarms and brings relaxation. By not placing myself above the client, but instead using my own ridiculousness as a tool, we create equality. The client thinks: \u201cIf you dare to make a fool of yourself, then I guess I can park my drama for a minute too.\u201d It lightens the mood, adds perspective, and suddenly even tough topics become talkable.\u00a0The provocative coach uses laughter as a gentle crowbar \u2014 to amplify what\u2019s already there, including the resistance: \u201cOh, your inner saboteur dropped by for coffee again? Perfect \u2014 put them at the steering wheel and let\u2019s see how fast your ship sinks.\u201d It\u2019s bold, but always with warmth. And that mix of playfulness and empathy is what gets people moving. And yes, as a coach, I laugh hard \u2014 often <em>the hardest<\/em> \u2014 at my own awkwardness: I\u2019m just winging it too!<br \/>\nBecause if you want to help people free themselves from heaviness, you\u2019d better be willing to slip on your own metaphorical banana peel every now and then.\u00a0And let\u2019s be honest: a little laughter while working on yourself is a lot more fun than crying on a yoga mat in a desert of self-awareness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a provocative coach, I\u2019m the jester with a mission: challenging with warmth, confronting with humor, and never afraid to make a complete fool of myself!
